Shore Road Promenade
Situated in the heart of Sandbanks and offering a gateway to one of Britain’s best beaches, Shore Road is now a worthy starting point onto the promenade around Poole Bay. Creating an attractive plaza with new seating and improved signage, offering a greater sense of arrival and welcome to the area. Improvements include:
- Refurbished toilets and showers.
- A new beach office and extended catering kiosk.
- New and modernised beach huts.
- New watersports concession awarded to Easy Riders opened in May 2021.
- The final touches were completed in May 2021 with the installation of stone benches.

July 2019 Update - Plans for Shore Road improvements have taken a step forward with the appointment of the contractor, construction specialist Stepnell Ltd. Work is expected to start early September 2019.
Nov 2018 Update - tender for construction issued. Construction planned for Autumn/Winter 2019.
Sept 2018 Update - as part of the Borough of Poole Seafront Development project, plans submitted in a Planning Application (ref: APP/18/01039/F) for formal public consultation were approved on 26th September.

What are the proposed designs for Shore Road?
The proposed site plan was submitted with the issue of tender for construction in November 2018. Proposals include public art, seating, resurfacing, refurbished toilets & showers, two new short-term hire beach huts, a new beach office, watersports centre and catering kiosk.

The Beach Ranger Service will operate from a temporary beach office at Shore Road in 2018, prior to a permanent office opening in early 2020.

Branksome Chine
Phase 2 started March 2020 – works on hold during COVID-19 restrictions.

- Public toilets refurbishment
- New shower facilities installed next to beach office

- Land Train turning area formalised with a paved stone circle

Thank you for the many comments received sharing views on the Branksome Chine promenade design proposal during recent public engagement held on 15th August to 15th September 2018. All comments have been collated for the project team to review and help shape the final designs for Branksome Chine promenade.
Branksome Chine improvements include:
- Enhanced public plaza with improved surfacing and artistic features
- New benches, landscaping and planting to soften tarmac surfaces
- Enhanced Land Train features and services

How much will it cost?
Of the £1.2million awarded from the Coastal Community Fund for improvements along Poole’s Seafront, up to £180,000 is allocated to Branksome Chine.
Project Background
The Borough of Poole Seafront Development Project plans to regenerate Poole seafront by investing in this prime tourist destination to encourage people to Poole seafront as a place to live, work and play.
Poole seafront helps to define the character of Poole, providing a magnificent backdrop to Poole Bay and contributes to the £200 million annual tourism expenditure in Poole. The seafront is used year round by various individuals or groups and experiences huge variations in visitor numbers.
Developments will include new and improved beach huts, seafront facilities and enhanced public spaces. Coordinated public space improvements are required to accentuate each location’s special appeal. Experienced artists/landscape designers will be commissioned to contribute to the aesthetics of the seafront.
The Locations
The Dorset Coastal Connections project has partnered with four of the Borough of Poole's Seafront Development Projects based along Poole Seafront.
Flaghead Beach - Seaside garden & four new beach huts - project completed
A stunning triplet of Portland stone shell sculptures are the focal point of a new Seaside garden at Flaghead Chine. Designed to connect the spectacular views through the wooded chine onto the beach and beyond to the Purbeck Hills. The garden offers younger visitors an opportunity for sensory and quiet play, and an inspirational meeting point for friends and family. This project was completed on 20th June 2018.
Flaghead Chine is a quiet route linking Haven Road to the beach east of Shore Road. A peaceful area where beach huts predominate and Flaghead Chine meets the promenade.

Shore Road Beach - The family beach
The beach is just off Shore Road and has a family feel.
This site focuses on the beach end of Shore Road south of the junction with Banks Road, centred around the pedestrian approach to the beach and the small cluster of commercial outlets and public facilities. Potential development here is to improve facilities, refurbish buildings, introduce new improved beach huts and enhance the public space in front of the beach huts and next the where the Shore Road Beach Station is currently located.
Local landscape artist, Amanda Moore was appointed to re-design the public space at Shore Road. Amanda has been commissioned to work as part of the project team to create a greater sense of arrival and welcome by enhancing this prominent space on Poole Seafront,
Branksome Beach - A window on the beaches
A magnificent location that features the Branksome Chine Solarium and the Beach Station which are locally listed buildings and within the Branksome Park and Chine Gardens Conservation Area. Branksome Chine is a showcase location for the beaches, with a wide chine, sea views accessibility and frontage parking. There is potential along the beach front and adjacent to the car park to improve public areas and create space for the seafront land train to turn around.
Local landscape artist, Amanda Moore has recently been appointed to re-design the public space at Branksome Chine. As at Shore Road, Amanda has been commissioned to work as part of the project team to create a greater sense of arrival and welcome by enhancing this prominent space on Poole Seafront.

Canford Cliffs Beach - The village beach
Canford Cliffs delightful and historic wooded chine leads to Canford Cliffs
Beach where there is room to provide more beach huts, improve food and drink outlets and facilities at promenade level.
In February 2017 a section of cliff eroded and slid down the cliff face at Canford Cliffs and has caused unforeseen and unavoidable delays to the seafront development project at this site. Development is currently on hold until September 2019 whilst necessary stabilisation works take place on the cliff prior to progressing with this project. Sustaining Poole's Seafront
This project contributes to the Borough of Poole's Sustaining Poole's Seafront Supplementary Planning Document (SPD) which presents ideas, initiatives and developments across the beach environment. The SPD sets out the 25 year vision, identifying a framework for potential delivery of managed improvements and change. These projects are not exhaustive but promotes opportunities for commercial investment whilst respecting the historic and natural environments of the beaches.
Dorset Coastal Connections
The Poole seafront development project is part of the ‘Coastal Connections - People and Places’ project funded by the Coastal Communities Fund, and will receive £1.2 million towards its costs from this successful bid, granted in April 2017. These funds will contribute to the public space developments at each of the four locations. The remaining funds of £9.5 million are being invested by the BCP Council, the project partner leading on this project.
